Agriculture posted a 3.52 percent growth in year
2000. The
adverse developments during the fourth quarter of the year did
not totally dampen the sector's performance. Output gains were
recorded in all subsectors. Gross value of agricultural production
was estimated at P574.9 billion at current prices and indicated
a 2.19 percent increase in 2000. |

The
3.73 percent expansion in the crops subsector was driven by the
impressive production performance of palay, coconut and banana.
These
crops chalked up output increases of 5.11 percent, 14.52 percent
and 7.40 percent, respectively. The subsector's output was valued
at P305.7 billion at current prices. This was equivalent to a
2.14 percent decrease in gross earnings this year. |

The livestock subsector continued to perform well
as it produced 2.96 percent more output than in 1999. The uptrend was noted
in all the components. The subsector grossed P100.6 billion at
current prices. This was 6.93 percent above last year's level. |

The
poultry subsector recorded a healthy performance and capped a
5.74 percent gain in output this year. There was a considerable surge in chicken
and egg production. The estimated gross value of poultry output
was P73.6 billion at current prices, up by 11.0 percent from
1999 gross earnings. |

Aquaculture
propelled the fishery subsector to a 1.74 percent increment in
production this year. While municipal fisheries sustained a steady
output clib, commercial fisheries stood as a loser this year.
The subsector grossed P95.0 billion at current prices, earning
5.82 percent more than in 1999. |

On
the average, farmgate prices depreciated by 1.28 percent. The crops subsector
suffered the biggest price cut at 5.66 percent. In particular,
the coconut industry as hit by a tremendous 44.71 percent drop
in price. Average price gains of about four the five percent
were recorded in the other subsectors. |
